The story and the evidence

An AI tool becomes more useful when it can work with information beyond its training and connect to software. Grok’s search and tool-use release brought those functions together with reasoning modes.

xAI’s September 2025 release describes a model combining reasoning modes with web and X search. Its model card discusses tool-use training, evaluations and safeguards. Such capabilities can support workflows that retrieve information and act through software, creating an opportunity to automate parts of research or routine work. Release; Model card

The context

The ability to use a tool does not prove that an agent understands the complete business objective or will execute it reliably. Supplier evaluations cannot establish a customer’s return on investment. Search can retrieve incorrect material, and a workflow can repeat an error across several actions. The model card is useful disclosure but remains vendor-authored. Its historical release also does not guarantee that the same API model remains available today.

Why it matters

The release extends the product’s role from generating an answer towards supporting a workflow. Developers can build around retrieval and tool use, connecting model capability with practical tasks in research and software. That is a useful step in turning AI development into a commercial toolset.

Reliable work still requires integration, checking and appropriate supervision. Supplier evaluations do not establish every customer’s return, and tool use can propagate errors. The documented contribution is the set of capabilities released; their business value depends on the quality and cost of the work completed with them.
