The story and the evidence

Tesla’s energy story has moved well beyond a product announcement. Its segment accounts show a growing business supplying the equipment customers use to generate and store electricity.

Tesla’s energy generation and storage segment reported $12.771 billion revenue and 29.8% gross margin in 2025, compared with $10.086 billion and 26.2% in 2024. Segment disclosures

The growth gives the energy business a substantial commercial identity alongside Tesla’s vehicles, with storage firmly part of the operating record.

The context

Gross margin excludes costs needed to arrive at company-wide operating or net profit. Tesla also disclosed $1.12 billion of manufacturing credits benefiting energy cost of revenue in 2025. A comparison that omits policy support could overstate the economics of production without that support. Energy accounting disclosures

Why it matters

Energy deserves a central place in the Musk story. Revenue rose from $10.086 billion in 2024 to $12.771 billion in 2025, while the reported gross margin increased from 26.2% to 29.8%. The figures show commercial demand and an expanding operation beyond automotive manufacturing.

This is entrepreneurship expressed through industrial delivery: making storage products manufacturable, saleable and available to customers. Policy credits contribute to the reported economics and remain visible in the account. Segment performance and the benefit of each installation are separate questions, but the size and growth of the business are established achievements.
